Weekly Remedy – Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin

I am not so very different from the rest of the population in my age range.  I have fifty-something year old joints and I use them every day. My knees ache from all the use they’ve been through. Shoulders and elbows creek too. Growing old blows, but it is a fact of life. I like to do more than use those knees for walking. Exercise is good for the soul and can be hard on the body. Climbing stairs is a little rough on the knees, but makes a great workout.

I found something to take the pain away, or at least ease it. It is called shark cartilage, because that is one of its sources. Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin is its real name. You can buy each of these things seperatetly, but the magic of their combination make them the supplement of choice.

I first heard of this in the thoroughbred horse industry. Race horses put their joints through a lot of hard work and trainers give them this supplement to reinforce the tissues and ligaments. If it’s good enough for million dollar equines, by golly it should be good enough for people. It works superbly on humans.

Chondroitin helps the body maintain fluid and flexibility in the joints. Glucosamine is a naturally occurring substance that helps develop and renew cartilage and keep it lubricated for better joint movement and flexibility. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring form of sulfur that helps support muscles and tendons in the body. All three work together to ease pain and lubricate joints.

Without this wonderful supplement I’d be in pain, my left knee would hurt horribly and my hips would be stiff and rickety. I like moving around like the thirty-five year old I am in my head. It reinforces the illusion of youth.

The easiest brand to find for this miracle combination is Osteo-Biflex.

It is a well manufactured supplement and you will get your money’s worth. There other reliable brands out there, you have to investigate them, but whatever it is, use it! It takes about a week or two before you see results. Hang in there and don’t give up. It will make you feel better.

And this is this week’s weekly remedy!

Weekly Remedy – Chicken Soup

Winter is upon us. Cold, wet, cold and really cold. It’s the flu season. Stuffy noses and coughs, congested chests… feeling miserable. The best defense against the illnesses of the season is simple.

Chicken soup.

There is something about chicken soup that shortens the life span of the common cold and/or a bout of the flu.

My favorite recipe is the one Pioneer Woman gives us.

1 whole Chicken
1 whole Bay Leaf
64 ounces, fluid Unsalted (or Low Sodium) Chicken Broth (you May Use Half Broth And Half Water If Desired.)
1 whole Large Onion, Chopped
3 whole Ribs Of Celery, Sliced
3 whole Carrots, Peeled And Chopped
3 whole Parsnips, Peeled And Chopped
1/2 teaspoon Salt
Ground Black Pepper
Preparation Instructions
Place all ingredients but the pepper into a pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover and simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until chicken is done, vegetables are tender, and soup flavor is divine. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
Serve in a bowl, then sprinkle black pepper over the top.
*Note: Adjust broth levels and/or vegetable amounts as needed.

Thank you Ree for your gift of food.

If you eat this before, during and in the middle of your cold or flu, your illness will get better faster. Truly. Really.

Give it a try.

Weekly Remedy – Fish Oil

I know, we have heard so much about fish oil. But …. too much cannot be said about this awesome supplement. Our bodies use omega 3 fatty acids to reduce inflammation throughout our system. By inflammation I mean any form of swelling. Swelling in our joints, swelling in tissues, swelling in our blood vessels.

I know all the sources state how omega 3’s are beneficial for your heart and your brain. All so true. I want to rave about how fish oil helps the swelling and pain of semi minor arthritis.

I started using fish oil eight years ago. The reason I added it to my family’s supplement regimen was for the heart benefit. It’s other benefits escaped me at the time. If you’ve ever taken fish oil, you know how big the capsules are. Monster big pills. Little did I know those things produced gas. Burping fish oil isn’t all that pleasant, but if you persevere, your body adjusts and the gas ceases. This is the only con to taking fish oil.

The amazing thing I discovered, about two weeks later, was the stiffness in my hands abated. I have mild arthritis and when the humidity rises in this part of the country, my hands swell a little and are stiff and a little achy when I wake up in the morning. Well… after taking fish oil every day the swelling in my hands receded enough for me to get my wedding band back on. What a surprise!

Another benefit, I also noticed my memory at work was so much more acute. I remembered details I didn’t usually recall. I knew it had to be the fish oil. EPA promotes nerve growth and DHA works on the cardiovascular system.

Yes, omega 3’s do all the things the literature claim. The true benefit is when you notice the improvement in your health and well being so quick and finite. This is a must add to one’s daily routine.

Good health and happy living!

Weekly Remedy – Oil of Oregano

I’d never heard of oregano in oil form before 2006. After listening to Dr. Becker from Bioinnovations rave about it,  I bought some to find out how it works.

I gave it to my hubby. He snored horribly for years. Not that I hated his snoring. Oddly, when I woke up in the middle of the night that sound was a comfort to me. It told me I wasn’t alone in the dark. He took the first caplet willingly. Once that caplet hits your stomach, you are in for a real surprise. Be sure you don’t eat it on an empty stomach. The dear man endured the strong oregano flavor most of the evening that first time. To his credit he took it every day for weeks. One night I woke up to the dark house, expecting to hear the comforting rattle of my hubby’s  familiar snore, only find… silence.

Quiet, empty air. Imagine my surprise! That morning, when he woke, I broke the news. No snoring. Oil of oregano really did help.

Fungus takes root inside the sinus cavity and results in frequent head colds, sinusitus and infections, along with snoring. Get rid of the fungus and clear up many problems.

Oregano oil is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral.

The primary agent in oil of oregano are a couple of  phenols:

  • Thymol – a natural fungicide with antiseptic properties. It helps boost your immune system, works as a shield against toxins, and even helps prevent tissue damage and encourages healing.
  • Carvacrol – found to be effective against various bacterial infections, such as candida albicans, staphylococcus, E. coli, campylobacter, salmonella, klebsiella, the aspergillus mold, giardia, pseudomonas, and listeria. [1]

This makes it a powerful agent against fungus and yeast, respiratory infections. urinary tract infections, parasitic infestations of giardia and MRSA.

I tell you it really works.

I get a very good product from Bioinnovations. It has the strongest carvacrol content of most brands.

Best of luck

Welcome Back to the Weekly Remedy

Let’s see… How long has it been? Umm… Months. What sort of blogger leaves her blog unattended that long? In this case a “too busy to really get into her writing responsibilities” girl. The world is huge and so much going on in it.

I took a vacation with my family to see my mother in Michigan. A great trip for my daughter who has never seen the Great Lakes state. Then I went from a night shift position to a day shift position. That took me several weeks to get accustomed to.

Now I’m ready!

This is the first installment of the weekly remedy.

Last week my husband took a short trip to a nearby big town. On his way he made a little side stop to an herbalist in a very small town. We nickname the sweet man “the witch doctor”. He isn’t a witch and he isn’t odd in any bad way. The man is uncannily correct in so many peculiar ways.

My husband went inside his shop. It is an open room with a few chairs lined up along a wall. The “patient” talks to him at the counter. He told the man I had migraines and has trouble sleeping. That was all he said. Without blinking, the man looked my husband in the eye  and stated:

“She has five kidney stones in her left ureter. She has a crick in her neck and her right arm goes numb when she sleeps. Kidney stones shed during September, October and November.”

My hubby was stunned! So was I when he relayed the story to me. I DO have a crick in my neck and my right arm always gets numb when I sleep. How could he know such implicit details? The man knows thousands of secrets of the human body. I did a brief survey of my coworkers. Everyone had visited the man at some point in their lives. He is the last resort when conventional medicine fails. And he usually fixes the problem!

The prescription for my ailment is 3 oz apricot juice, 3 oz tonic water, a pinch of nutmeg and 3 tablets of Thaumaturge NU-Impose every night for 3 weeks, none for one week and then take them for one last week. I’ve been taking this little concoction for four days and I know my neck isn’t as creeky and my arm didn’t go numb last night!! Hurrah!! Hurrah! I hope this is really going to stick.

NU IMPOSE Vegetarian approved - 180

Secretly I am a naturalist and read and study natural healing remedies. The heroine in a future book is an herb guru. I’m going to seed her book with lots of these little gems. This may be an outlet for the writer in me, but it will also satisfy the  healer that I secretly nurture.

Happy and healthy living!

Gotta Keep that Heart Pumping!!

As a romance writer I know all about the heart pumping away. It’s what makes us all hot and bothered. (I love hot and bothered.) But…..

On a practical note, it also keeps us healthy and fit – if we take excellent care of it. I am not a fitness fanatic, but I am somewhat of a health fanatic. I work in the medical field in my day job and I know how important it is to keep my body healthy. If we don’t take a proactive approach to our health and bodies we will end up sick and out of shape. I want to keep my mind sharp and the best way I know to do that is to keep my body awake and mobile. It sort of connects don’t you think? The brain is firing with all sorts of ideas and bunnies because all those muscles are moving making the blood flow … back to the BRAIN!

Sorry. Tangent there.

Personally, I do a thirty minute elliptical exercise daily with some Pilates or Yoga a few times a week. It’s about all my older body will handle. (Hate aging. So debilitating) But! exercise really does keep me moving.

This brings me to an awesome little find. I was watching the weekend Today show just after New Years and Jenna Wolfe put forth a very minimal exercise routine for all of us office rats. Sitting in a chair is of dire importance for word count and finishing that breakout novel.

I have done these exercises so they are totally doable. No excuses and they don’t take any space just a little time. That is no excuse either. We all have to take a break every hour, don’t we?

Click on the link and Jenna will give the whole run down. Remember now… you have to keep that heart pumping to get your brain really engaged.

I am sorely lacking in skills to get this to embed.  Here is the link that gives you the video. Very easy and straight forward.

Just do it! (To borrow a phrase.)

And happy writing in your new, fit body!!
